What the research shows


Across hundreds of controlled trials, psychological therapy is one of the most reliably effective interventions in healthcare and the research now extends specifically to work-related psychological harm, trauma recovery, and the work of getting back to functioning.


  • Systematic review, 8 mental disorders, 2024 the most recent comprehensive meta-analysis of psychotherapy outcomes; clinically meaningful response and remission rates across depression, anxiety, PTSD and other major conditions.


  • Long-term PTSD outcomes, 2021a systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 randomised trials (N = 2,638) found that trauma-focused psychological treatments produced large effect sizes from pretest to 12-month follow-up, with gains maintained over time.


  • CBT and return to work, 2023a meta-analysis of 34 randomised trials found that CBT-based interventions reduced sick-leave duration, helped employees return to work sooner, and improved depression and overall functioning compared with usual care.


Why work with a psychologist


There are good counsellors who aren't psychologists, and the work they do can be valuable. However, for the things people most often bring here: burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma responses, the long shadow of a difficult workplace, there are reasons to work with someone clinically trained.


  • Diagnostic clarity: what's actually going on, what isn't responding to standard support, and whether you need short-term counselling or longer-term therapy.


  • Evidence-based treatment: cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, schema-informed and trauma-focused approaches are the methods with the strongest research behind them.


  • AHPRA accountability: confidentiality, ethics and scope of practice governed by professional standards.

Coaching is the fit when you're functioning, capable, and oriented toward forward movement.


Psychologists can hold both and adjust the work as we go.
